Cummins hosts UK Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg

On January 17th, 2013, Cummins Turbo Technologies welcomed Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg, to its Huddersfield, U.K., site. He reviewed the Engine Waste Heat Recovery Research Programme research and†development project, which has been able to proceed due†to a grant of £1.4 milliion from the U.K. Government.

Cummins Turbo Technologies has been the lead organisation with Cummins Generator Technologies playing a significant role in the development of an advanced high speed electrical generator (patent pending) and electronic control system.

The UK Regional Growth Funding (RGF) grant has enabled the development and testing of next generation, green technology that recovers wasted heat from various points of the engine and uses it to increase overall engine efficiency. The aim is to improve the fuel efficiency by 5†percent and a corresponding reduction in carbon dioxide.

Since receiving the funding the global engineering team has designed, sourced and built an Advanced Waste Heat Turbine Expander, which incorporates an electrical generator, designed in collaboration with Cummins Generator Technologies in Stamford, U.K.

Executive Director for Product Line Management & Marketing Mark Firth commented, 'Cummins Turbo Technologies is committed to creating next generation technologies and enhancements that reflect the changing priorities of global engine and vehicle manufacturers whose future products are being developed to insulate customers from rising fuel prices.

'The RGF has enabled us to push the technological boundaries of what has previously been achieved†in the automotive industry. This, coupled with our existing expertise in design, testing and manufacturing development capabilities on site at Huddersfield, ensures that we continue to innovate in the market and safeguard engineering, research and development roles.' The RGF was launched by the Deputy Prime Minister in June 2010 to provide support for projects that offer significant potential for sustainable economic growth, and that can protect and create new private sector employment.
