Power solutions for grid peak shaving applications

Baifa Power (Wuxi) Ltd., based in Wuxi, China has dedicated 33 years to the research, development, and manufacturing of diesel generator sets. The company’s products cover a power range of 10 to 4,000 kVA. Through years of development, Baifa Power has become a significant manufacturer of generator sets within China, offering comprehensive power system solutions from design to operational support.

Objective

In recent years, Central America and the Caribbean have faced frequent large-scale blackouts. These power shortages are often caused by ageing infrastructure, fragile grids, and outdated equipment prone to failure. Partnering with local utilities, Wuxi Baifa deployed over 200 diesel generator sets as reliable backup power sources. These units played a vital role in ensuring continuity of power supply for critical facilities and commercial operations during grid instability.

Solution Development

During this process, STAMFORD collaborated closely with Wuxi Baifa, providing efficient and stable 
generator set solutions. Each unit was equipped with a STAMFORD S6L1D-F4 alternator and a Cummins KTA50-G3 engine, delivering an output power of 1,000kW.

Project Scope

In peak shaving scenarios, when power demand surges or primary generators fail, backup equipment must start quickly and begin supplying electricity reliably. During grid fluctuations, generators are also required to deliver precise voltage regulation and reactive power control. STAMFORD alternators offer superior electrical performance and parameter configurations that align perfectly with these demands. Moreover, since peak shaving stations are often installed outdoors, sometimes 
in dusty or harsh environments, STAMFORD alternators provide robust protection against tough conditions. This ensures stable operation and maximises uptime.
